About the artist

His early years were spent there before moving to Hermannsburg where he attended the Mission school. He worked on the mission station doing various jobs including building work and as a stockman. He married Betty Namatjira, a granddaughter of Albert Namatjira. He had known her from his schooldays.

In more recent years Marcus studied to become a Lutheran pastor and was ordained in 2008. As at 2020 he is one of two Aboriginal pastors serving the people of Hermannsburg. Painting landscapes has been a hobby that Marcus has taken up in later years largely due to his wife Bettys encouragement. They have three daughters and a number of grandchildren and great grandchildren.
